Funchal (Madeira)
Funchal is a banquet of sights, sounds and smells. Founded by Portugese navigator Joao Zarco in 1421, it is set in a curving conch of mountains on the southern shores of the wild, rugged Madeira Island. This whitewashed, bougainvillea-clad town is perhaps best known for its Madeira wines, which have been produced here since the 18th century.
